I love reading. But I especially love reading in the summertime.
One of my favorite things is to go to the beach, bring a chair and a beach umbrella and read while listening to the ocean waves.
I’m lucky enough that I’m only an hour and a half away from the beach. When I was a kid, my family didn’t have a lot of money, so my grandparents and mom would pool their money together so that we could rent a shore house down at the Jersey shore for a week.
We would be on the beach all day and sometimes would even eat dinner there and watch the sun set.
And four decades later, I still love the beach.
Even if you’re not able to get away, I think having some summer books can be a lot of fun. So here are some recommendations that are a mix of learning and pleasure.
The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business
I learned a lot about how my brain works and why while reading this book. It really gave me a better understanding of why it’s so hard to create a new habit as we need to create new neural pathways in our brain to change our behaviors. This takes time.
There’s a quote in this book that I read as an affirmation every morning: “I expand in abundance, success, and love every day, as I inspire those around me to do the same.” Gay Hendricks wrote a really great book, and I found this to be extremely helpful in my day-to-day life.
Chen’s book is fictional, but I couldn’t put down this imagined life of Joan of Arc. Back in elementary school, I read a lot about Joan and have always been impressed with her story. Reading about the underdog and how she was able to save France is just the sort of summer read that I found engaging.
L. M. Montgomery’s series about an adopted fiery redhead who will not let anyone hold her back is my comfort read. I first read the series when I was 13 or 14 years old. I had seen the PSB mini-series in the ‘80s and fell in love with Anne. If you’ve never read this series, it’s a great summer read. I’ve shared the books with both my son and daughter, and we’ve all watched the more recent Anne with an E Netflix series. You can’t go wrong with this series.
I hope that these book recommendations give you some joy and help you to relax this summer!
Great list! Eclectic, informative and interesting.
